Coffee Shop Vibe
"Coffee Shop Atmosphere" is the flagship mix of the City Life category: a base of café atmosphere (dense but unintelligible hum), with keyboard tapping, the stream of water from the espresso machine and a quiet air conditioner on top. The "classic third-wave coffee shop" in Brooklyn, Berlin, Moscow — the modern replacement of the public library for millions of freelancers.
The mix recreates the classic "Coffitivity effect" — the concept of the popular Coffitivity website, based on the work of Mehta, Zhu and Cheema (Journal of Consumer Research, 2012). Their study showed that 70 dB background noise — exactly café level — is optimal for creative work. Paradoxically, mild distraction improves associative thinking because the brain doesn't "loop" on a single thought. The effect is also confirmed in later work by Yamane and Komori (Frontiers in Psychology, 2017): productivity on creative tasks is higher at 60–75 dB than in full silence.
Use this mix for remote work (a standard choice of contemporary freelancers), for creative tasks (especially conceptual — strategy, design, copywriting), for writing, for podcasts on business and productivity, for people with mild social anxiety (the mix creates "public presence" without social pressure), and to imitate "going to a café" on days when you can't or don't want to. Pairs with Coffee Shop Coding (more "technical" kin), Sunday in a Café (relaxed variant), Café in the Rain (cosiness).
