The metro is one of the most psychologically complex biomes of the big city. It's a harsh industrial noise that causes discomfort in newcomers, but for millions of daily users it's part of the sonic home, an environment so familiar it becomes the sonic underlay of life. Levin and colleagues (Behaviour Research and Therapy, 2018) documented that big-city residents with long metro experience develop a specific adaptation to this noise, and hearing it in a homely context can evoke positive nostalgia.
