Subway Reading

"Reading in the Metro" is a travel mix for urban transit: a base of underground metro (muffled, as if through a book), with quiet rustles and occasional keyboards (neighbouring passengers) on top. "Rush hour in the Moscow or Paris metro with a book in hand" — an image of contemporary urban reading.

Reading in the metro is a particular cognitive skill that many city dwellers develop in early adulthood. Sörqvist and colleagues (Journal of Educational Psychology, 2010) showed that reading under constant background noise requires trained selective attention. Paradoxically, many people note that they "read better in the metro than at home" — because the absence of alternatives (you can't get up, can't check email) and the neutral noise mask distracting thoughts. This effect is described as "environmental focus" — concentration imposed by the environment.

Use this mix to imitate "metro reading" at home (for people who moved from a megalopolis to a quieter place), to prepare for long flights or trips (training reading in a noisy environment), for people with ADHD who need moderate background noise to concentrate, for writing urban prose, and for podcasts on urban culture. Pairs with Metro (to amplify urban context), Train Journey (long version), Reading (quiet variant). Not for deep concentration on open texts (for that the library is better).
