Underground subway

"Underground Metro" is the soundscape inside a subway car: a rumbling, very dense noise of 75–85 dB from wheel-rail interaction in an enclosed tunnel, the resonant echo of walls, periodic sharp whistles in curves, the dispatcher's voice at stations (muffled), the hiss of pneumatic doors. One of the loudest regular sounds of urban life — Niemann and colleagues (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2015) measured noise in metros of 80+ cities and found many lines exceed 85 dB, the WHO threshold for safe 8-hour exposure.

Psychologically the metro is a curious paradox: technically the noise is hazardous, but millions hear it daily and associate it with a familiar part of urban rhythm. For megalopolis dwellers it is part of the "sound home," and many feel paradoxical nostalgia after moving to a quiet suburb. On the other hand, the underground placement and enclosure create a characteristic "cocoon" effect — a feeling of "cut off from the outer world for 20 minutes" — which some people use as a mini-meditative break (read-on-the-metro).

Use this track for writing urban prose (Gogol, Sorokin, Ira Levin), for city and infrastructure podcasts, for "megalopolitan" people temporarily living in quiet who feel nostalgia, and for sound design. Pairs with City Noise, Passenger Train, Highway. Not for long work backdrop — noise level is too high and fatigues; and not for sleep.
