0Lawn mowing
"Lawn Mowing" is the soundscape of a petrol or electric lawnmower at work: a steady mid-to-high-frequency engine hum (500–2000 Hz with higher overtones), periodic varying grass rustle, occasional brief load spikes when hitting a dense patch, slow distance changes as the mower walks back and forth. The typical sound of a suburban Saturday morning across most of the Western world.
Psychologically this sound is paradoxical: for the mower it is the sound of "job being done" with a pleasant light effort, but for a neighbour 50 metres away it is an irritant. Cohen and colleagues (Environment and Behavior, 1986) showed in a classic study that perceived "controllability" of noise critically affects its stressfulness: the same 65 dB sound pressure coming from your own work causes far less stress than when it comes from a neighbour. This is why mowing your own lawn is pleasant while a neighbour's is unbearable.
Use this track for writing suburban and family prose (Cheever, Updike, Franzen), for podcasts on home and domestic life, for sound design (a "domestic-work" reference), and to imitate "summer at the cottage" in playlists. Pairs with Singing Birds, Light Breeze, Village Morning. Not for sleep or concentration — steady high-frequency hum tires quickly; and note that for people who grew up in noisy suburbs this is a very strong nostalgic trigger.
