0Typing on keyboard
"Keyboard Typing" is the signature sound of working at a computer: a rhythmic "tap-tap-tap" on ordinary office keys (membrane or scissor-switch, about 50–55 dB), with variable tempo 200–400 keystrokes per minute (matching comfortable 40–70 wpm), occasional louder Enter and Backspace, an odd "double click" of the mouse in the background. The acoustic signature of 21st-century office work.
Psychoacoustically keyboard noise is a "social sound": even working alone at home, listening to someone else's typing tempo creates a feeling of "collective work." Bao and colleagues (Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 2018) showed that listening to sounds of shared activity — typing, paper rustle, conversation — increases remote workers' sense of "team belonging" and reduces isolation. This works through the same "parasocial presence" mechanism as café sounds.
Additionally an even typing tempo has a light "hypnotic" effect, similar to a ticking clock: it structures time and helps enter flow. Use this track for remote work (imitating "colleagues at the next desk"), for writing (for writers who benefit from the feeling "someone else writes nearby"), for podcasts on work and productivity, and for imitating office space in a purely creative environment. Pairs with Office Atmosphere, Public Library, Air Conditioner. Suitable for light sleep too, but less than pure pink noise.
