Pomodoro Mode
"Pomodoro" is a specialised focus mix for working with the Pomodoro Technique (25 min work + 5 min break), developed by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s: a base of steady 60 bpm rhythm (one beat per second, like a mechanical metronome), with neutral brown noise and a barely audible ticking clock as a "second metronome" on top. The "sound of a running timer," turned into a permanent background.
The Pomodoro principle (Cirillo, The Pomodoro Technique, 2018) rests on the idea that attention is held optimally only in short intervals with mandatory breaks. A regular predictable background rhythm helps maintain the "mental tempo" of work: every second is marked, every 60 seconds a minute, every 25 minutes a pomodoro. It produces a clear sense of time passing without needing to look at a clock. Levin and colleagues (Computers in Human Behavior, 2017) showed that audio progress signals statistically significantly improve adherence to time-management techniques.
Use this mix for people using the Pomodoro method (especially if you find it hard to "feel" time passing), to enforce discipline under self-management, for people with ADHD who do better in short intervals, for drafting (where word count matters more than quality — tempo is key), and for prepping for exams with large material loads. Pairs with 60 bpm Drum A (stronger tempo), Library Study (when academic discipline is needed), Brown Noise (to extend beyond 25 minutes).
