"Air Conditioner" is the soundscape of a typical split-system home AC: a steady broadband fan noise (about 45–55 dB), occasional thermostat clicks when the compressor cycles, the barely audible "ff" of airflow through the louvres. Spectrally close to a mix of pink and brown noise with a slight mid-band emphasis. One of the most widespread "domestic white noises" of the 21st century — especially in hot regions where AC runs 6–10 hours a day.
In sleep research the AC is more than a masker — it is an active sleep regulator. Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno (Journal of Physiological Anthropology, 2012) showed in a review that a bedroom temperature of 17–19°C significantly improves slow-wave sleep compared to 24°C. The sound of an AC, beyond acoustic masking, usually accompanies an optimal temperature environment — a double factor for good sleep. This explains why many people literally cannot fall asleep in a hotel room without a running AC, even when it is cool outside.
Use this track for sleep (especially in hot seasons without AC, or in winter by psychological association), to mask neighbours with an even broadband "curtain," for daytime power naps, for people who grew up in hot climates and feel "acoustic homesickness," and as a reference in sound design. Pairs with White Noise, Pink Noise, Floor Fan (relative). Excellent sleep background.
