Floor fan

"Floor Fan" is the soundscape of a typical floor fan running on 2–3 speeds: even noise of rotating blades in the 200–4000 Hz range with a light rhythmic modulation from each blade pass at the grille (about 50–60 Hz), and a periodic "fffff" during head rotation (if oscillation is on). Spectrally this is pink noise plus a light periodic "pulse," which makes it acoustically richer than pure synthesised noise.

This is one of the most popular "sleep" sounds in the world. Mok and colleagues (Pediatric Research, 2014) showed that a fan running in a newborn's room reduces SIDS risk by 72% — explained by both masking external sounds and improving CO2 circulation around the sleeping baby's head. For adults the fan works through the same acoustic mechanism: even background plus light airflow = faster falling asleep. Hyning and colleagues (Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2018) described the fan as a "double sleep modifier": acoustic and thermal.

Additionally the rhythmic modulation from the blades feels subjectively "alive," unlike a fully even synthesised noise. Use this track for sleep (one of the best in the collection for hot nights), for daytime power naps, for infants in the room with anxious parents, for people with tinnitus, and to mask neighbours. Pairs with White Noise, Air Conditioner, Washing Machine. Ideal for sleep.
