"Washing Machine" is the soundscape of an even mid-low drum hum during washing: a "uf-uf-uf" of heavy wet clothes, periodic program switches (quiet relay clicks, RPM changes), a distinct rising whine during spin (from ~600 to 1400 rpm) and final slow-down. One cycle lasts 45–90 minutes, giving a perfect "sonic timer marker" for a work session.
This sound is an example of what Ito and colleagues (Journal of Environmental Psychology, 2012) call "domestic-rhythm sound": steady, repetitive, clearly signalling that "things are running on schedule." Psychologically it creates a sense of organisation and productivity even in those who aren't doing any washing themselves at the moment. This effect is often used by remote workers: starting a wash during a work session is not only a useful chore but a psychological "productivity anchor."
Additionally the even drum hum is spectrally close to brown noise with a light rhythmic modulation, making it usable as a sleep background. Use this track for writing (especially domestic prose), to imitate "life is happening" in an empty apartment, for podcasts about home life, for daytime focus (the "timer" sound that signals "you've been working for half an hour until the spin"), and for light sleep. Pairs with Air Conditioner, Floor Fan, Shower. Suitable for sleep, but the spin phase is sharp — may wake you, better to use only the main cycle.
