0Gentle waves
Gentle waves are a light version of ocean dynamics, optimised for close-up presence on the water rather than for the open sea. The spectrum of these lapping waves shifts slightly toward the mid-range (200 to 2000 Hz) compared with a stormy ocean, which makes the track less massive and more comfortable for long sessions at moderate volume. Wave cycles here are shorter, around four to six seconds, which matches the natural resting breath rate.
The track is particularly well studied in restoration psychology. Graham Alcorn's group (Health & Place, 2019) found that 10 minutes of gentle wave exposure reduced subjective fatigue and lifted mood more than forest or stream sounds did. The authors link the effect to water biophilia, a neuropsychological mechanism by which soft fluid motion signals to the brain that a basic resource (drinking water) is nearby.
The track works best for a half-doze scenario in the evening after work, in a hammock or armchair, where it produces a 20-minute mini-vacation effect (Largo-Wight et al., 2011, IJERPH). It also helps with tinnitus in the mid-frequency range, since the broadband wave spectrum masks the most irritating band (it doesn't cure tinnitus, just temporarily mutes perception). And it works as background for analytical work (lawyers, translators, data analysts): less distracting than rain, less drowsy than a coffee shop.
Good combinations: with crying seagulls (a beach atmosphere), with a gentle breeze (extended nature), or with a singing bowl (meditation). Don't pair it with rolling thunder; the dynamics conflict. Skip it if you have hyperacusis (sound hypersensitivity), since even mild surf can intensify symptoms.
