0Chirping cicadas
Cicadas are by far the loudest insects on the planet. Their "song" is produced by a special organ — the tymbal, a membrane that flexes at 300-500 times per second, generating up to 100 dB at 30 cm from the animal (for reference: a lawn mower is about 90 dB). The French biologist Jérôme Sueur (Bioacoustics, 2002) was the first to describe the biomechanics of the tymbal in detail and showed that cicadas can sustain peak loudness for tens of minutes without fatigue — something impossible for most singing animals.
Psychologically, cicadas are the strongest cultural code for "summer day in southern latitudes". In Japan their song (especially the species Cryptotympana facialis) is treated as an official seasonal sound marker, alongside the spring sakura. A study by Kawaguchi and colleagues (Sound and Memory in Japanese Culture, 2018) showed that people raised in Japan experience a 0.3-0.5°C rise in skin temperature when hearing cicadas — an "acoustic warmth" effect.
Where to use:
— Simulating a summer day in winter — especially useful for people with seasonal depression in Mediterranean regions
— Deep concentration on monotonous work (data analysis, proofreading): a continuous spectrum without variation has a mild hypnotic effect
— Nostalgic atmosphere for writing about the south, childhood, travel
Pairs well with gentle breeze, distant waves, bees. Not for sleep — too stimulating. Don't combine with winter wind or northern tracks. Not recommended for hyperacusis.
