Coastal Cliff
"Sea Cliffs" is a dramatic nature scene with the acoustics of coastal cliffs on a stormy day: a base of waves smashing against rocks, with whistling wind over the cliff, seagull cries and the distant roar of disintegrating surf on top. The image from Breton, Cornish, Irish literature — Joyce's "Tristessa" and "Ulysses," the Cliffs of Moher.
The mix recreates one of the most emotionally powerful natural experiences. Wheeler and colleagues (Health & Place, 2012) showed that simply listening to coastal stormy sounds (without water) activates in people the same emotional centres as actually being by the sea: a mix of awe, fear and admiration. This is the state aesthetic philosophy calls "the sublime" — the lofty experience described already by Edmund Burke in A Philosophical Enquiry (1757). Modern neuroaesthetics confirms: experiencing the sublime has a unique psychological profile in which fear and pleasure activate simultaneously.
Use this mix for writing maritime and dramatic prose (Melville, Conrad, Hemingway), for podcasts on the sea and the history of seafaring, for creative work that needs a strong emotional tone, for emigrants from coastal regions, for "overcoming and elemental power" meditation, and for workouts (strength training rides well on the rhythm of waves). Pairs with Sunset Walk (transition), Ocean (calmer), Stormy Night (more drama). Not for sleep.
