0Crying seagulls
Crying seagulls are the acoustic emblem of the coast, evoking a specific emotion known in positive psychology as the "blue space response" — a reaction to water. The British epidemiologist Benedict White and colleagues (Health & Place, 2010) found that residents of coastal areas have 22% lower depressive symptom levels, even after controlling for socioeconomic factors. The auditory component of this "coastal happiness" is well-studied: the rhythm of waves plus occasional gull cries creates the pattern of "active, non-contradictory nature".
The Mappiness study (MacKerron & Mourato, Global Environmental Change, 2013), covering 22,000 British participants via a mobile app, found that coastal locations were the most "emotionally positive" of all environment types — surpassing city parks, nature reserves, and mountains. The authors hypothesised that the sound of the sea with gulls is a key component of this effect.
Where to use:
— An atmospheric layer for any sea mix (tropical beach, ocean, gentle waves)
— Easing winter melancholy for inland residents: simulating a seaside holiday
— Psychotherapy for grief or loss: an open coastal space "breathes" associatively, helping to process heavy emotion
Pairs well with gentle waves, gentle breeze, tropical beach. Don't use alone (in isolation gulls can sound "sad" or aggressive) — always as a layer over water. Not for people who associate gulls with traumatic sea events.
