Winter Wonderland
Winter Tale is a nature scene with the acoustics of a frosty January forest: a base of footsteps on compacted snow, with winter wind in bare branches, distant owl hoots in nighttime silence, and the occasional crack of a branch breaking in the frost on top. A Russian fairytale, Scandinavian noir, the Canadian Rockies: the image of the northern winter in all its stern magical grandeur.
Winter sounds have a unique acoustic property. Cold air (around -10°C) carries sound differently from warm, and sonic range in a winter forest is significantly larger. Wenz, in his work on hydro- and aero-acoustics (Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1962), described that in cold dense atmosphere high frequencies attenuate more slowly, giving sounds a characteristic sharp and far-reaching quality. This explains why footsteps on snow in a winter forest can be heard at disproportionate distances compared with summer steps.
Use this mix for winter evenings (especially December to February), for writing winter and fairytale prose (Hoffmann, Andersen, Lindgren), for a silence-and-purity meditation, for people recovering from stress, for podcasts on the North and winter travel, or as atmospheric background to Christmas and New Year videos. Pairs with Mountain Cabin (homely variant), Cabin in the Woods (more cosiness) or New Year's Night (festive blend). Also suitable for sleep.
