"Playground" is the sound of a typical urban playground at peak hours (after school, on a weekend): laughter, "tag" shouts, swing creak, ball impacts, parents' voices on benches, gravel and sand. This is one of the most emotionally loaded sounds in the urban landscape: for parents it instantly evokes "our own children," for non-parents it evokes their own childhood, and for the elderly it evokes a whole world that is gone.
Psychologically, children's laughter is fairly well studied. Provine in Laughter: A Scientific Investigation (Penguin, 2000) showed that children's laughter is acoustically different from adults': shorter, higher (around 400–600 Hz fundamental), and less "phonotactically" structured — i.e. it carries more raw emotion and less linguistic style. As a result, even in a foreign language children's laughter feels equally warm. Neuroimaging by Sander and Scheich (NeuroReport, 2005) further shows that children's laughter activates in adults the same prefrontal cortex zones that are active when looking at images of one's own children.
Use this track for family video calls (a background that automatically creates a "lived-in" feel), for writing family prose, for podcasts on parenting, for "return to childhood" meditation, for homesickness (those who moved to a city without familiar faces). Pairs with Park Atmosphere, Singing Birds, Light Breeze. Not for deep concentration — high emotional density pulls attention; and not for sleep — children's voices are too "demanding."[]
