Café is a medium-density background scene from a small urban café with eight to twelve tables: soft, indistinct voices from four to six conversations at once, the clink of cups against saucers, the espresso machine (steam, grinding, portafilter taps), the rustle of coats being hung and chairs being moved. This sound entered mass awareness as coffee-shop ambience thanks to Mehta, Zhu and Cheema (Journal of Consumer Research, 2012), popularised later by the Coffitivity site. Their paper showed that moderate background noise around 70 dB, exactly like a café, statistically significantly improves performance on creative tasks.
The mechanism is distraction-as-protection. In perfect silence the brain easily fixates on one idea, while a moderate background slightly blurs attention and boosts associative thinking (Mehta et al., 2012). Crucially, the noise must be unintelligible; if conversations are comprehensible, the speech centre activates and the effect disappears.
In this recording speech is deliberately muted: you hear conversational hum but no specific words, matching the experimental conditions. Use the track for creative work (especially when you need a non-standard approach), for writing (to recreate the café effect at home), for home work that imitates a public space (a good trick for remote workers), and for podcasts about urban life. Pairs with Café Atmosphere (a denser variant), Highway Noise (if you want the street outside too) and Rain on Windowsill. Not for deep sleep, since the speech texture keeps the language centre on light standby.
