0Raging waterfall
A raging waterfall sits on the edge between background sound and tactile sensation. The spectrum spans 30 Hz to 15 kHz with high energy in the lower band, producing not just auditory perception but a light physical sensation in the chest at volumes above 60 dB. This is rare among nature tracks; a waterfall effectively works as a natural brown noise with dynamic texture.
From the standpoint of positive psychology, a powerful waterfall belongs to the sublime category of landscapes described by Keltner and Haidt (Cognition & Emotion, 2003). Awe is the only emotion measurably expanding the sense of time: even 60 seconds of an awe stimulus make people more patient, less self-focused, and more creatively open (Rudd, Vohs & Aaker, Psychological Science, 2012).
Use it to mask very loud environments (a waterfall is the only nature track that competes with a power drill or loud conversation); before a difficult decision such as a job change, divorce or investment, where five minutes of waterfall delivers an awe reset and reduces short-term impulsivity; and for long cardio sessions on a bike or rowing machine, where the broadband sound masks heavy breathing and sustains tempo.
Pairs well with hooting owls (evening waterfall), singing birds (mountain scenario) or rolling thunder. Not for sleep, not for meditation and not for those with anxiety disorders: too intense. Ideal for a short activating session of 10 to 30 minutes.
