River Meditation
"Riverside Meditation" is a meditative mix with a riverine accent: a base of babbling creek (a constant soft flow), with singing bowl, a quiet Om and distant birdsong in the forest on top. The acoustic "meditation by a sacred river" — the Ganges at Rishikesh, the Jordan, Japanese mountain streams by Shinto shrines.
Rivers carry a particular meditative significance in most spiritual traditions worldwide. The sound of running water is the acoustic embodiment of the concept of "flowing being" (Heraclitus's "panta rhei"), and meditation by a river is traditionally used for practices of letting go of attachments and accepting change. Psychoacoustically, Alvarsson and colleagues (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2010) showed that water sounds restore the autonomic nervous system after stress 37% faster than silence, and a singing bowl combined with them gives an amplified effect (Goldsby et al., 2017).
Use this mix for meditative practices of letting go and acceptance (especially for those going through life changes — divorce, loss, job change), for yoga nidra, for meditative walks (with headphones), for writing prose on time and change (Tolstoy's "War and Peace," Mann's "The Magic Mountain"), and for spiritual practice in Hindu, Buddhist and Christian traditions. Pairs with Mountain Creek (natural variant), Seaside Meditation (kin scene), Sound Bath (deepening).
