Forest Meditation

Forest Meditation

"Forest Meditation" is a meditative mix with a nature accent: a base of dense forest (constant leaf rustle and distant birdsong), with singing bowl (as a "temple bell in a forest sanctuary"), babbling creek and quiet Om on top. A blend of Japanese "shinrin-yoku" and Buddhist meditative practice — the forest as natural temple.

Forest meditation is one of the most therapeutically effective forms of practice. Park and colleagues, in their foundational work on "shinrin-yoku" (Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, 2010), showed that 2 hours in the forest with mindful meditation lower cortisol, lower blood pressure and activate the parasympathetic system far more strongly than 2 hours in the city or 2 hours of indoor meditation without nature. The explanation runs through the concept of "biophilia" (Wilson, 1984) — humans' innate need for natural environment.

Use this mix for city dwellers without forest access (the mix works as "acoustic forest bathing"), for meditative morning practice, for people recovering from burnout or illness, for writing nature prose (Thoreau, Robert Macfarlane, Annie Dillard), for outdoor yoga or yoga at home with open windows, and for coaching sessions needing a "natural" emotional tone. Pairs with Morning Meditation (more spirituality), Forest Night (evening variant), Sacred Forest (kin scene).
