Garden Meditation

"Garden Meditation" is a meditative mix with the acoustics of a Japanese Zen garden or a European monastery garden: a base of quiet creek (a meditative fountain or cascade), with wind chimes and distant birds on top. A scene from Kyoto's Tofukuji and Ryoanji temples, from English Quaker gardens, from Moroccan riads with fountains.

The garden as a meditation site has a long tradition in all cultures. The Japanese Zen garden (karesansui) is specifically built for contemplation and meditation, and its acoustic concept includes "suikinkutsu" — underground ceramic resonators into which water drips, producing a characteristic chime. Söbel and colleagues (Sustainability, 2020) documented that 20-minute sessions in a garden lower cortisol more effectively than 20 minutes in a room with plants — i.e. it is the acoustic component of the garden (water, wind, birds) that gives the additional therapeutic effect.

Use this mix for garden meditation (if you have a garden — with the door open; if not — as a replacement), for Japanese-Chinese wellness practices (tai chi, qigong, kensho), for writing haiku and landscape prose, for podcasts on landscape design, for coaching sessions with a "cultivation" theme (inner and outer), and for people recovering from surgery or illness. Pairs with Bamboo Grove (more Japanese aesthetics), Lunch in the Park (urban variation), Forest Meditation (kin scene).
