"Aeroplane in Flight" is the soundscape inside a passenger plane cabin at cruise altitude: a steady, very dense engine hum of 70–80 dB, light structural vibration, the hiss of the air conditioning, very rare muffled crew announcements in the background. One of the "purest" examples of pink noise in the everyday world — almost perfectly even energy distribution across the broad 50–4000 Hz spectrum.
This is exactly why aeroplane hum is so often used as background for sleep and work. Zhou and colleagues (Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2012), in their work on pink noise, showed that such broadband background improves sleep quality by increasing delta-wave density. The plane hum also acts as a masker: it covers small irregular sounds in the home (slamming doors, voices behind walls) that would otherwise wake you. That is why many travellers unexpectedly fall asleep in flight, even in an uncomfortable seat — the combination of pink noise, light vibration and dim light works almost like a medical "sleep" environment.
Use this track as a sleep background (one of the best in the collection — try it if white noise feels too harsh), for long work (especially creative), for writing travel scenes, for tech and travel podcasts, and for people who love flying. Pairs with Pink Noise, Air Conditioner, High-Speed Train. Ideal for sleep.
