"Passenger Train" is the soundscape from inside an ordinary long-distance electric train: the even mechanical rhythm of wheels over rail joints ("clack-clack, clack-clack" at about 1–2 Hz), the low-frequency engine hum, light structural vibration, distant muffled voices from neighbouring compartments, hallway rustle. At a standard 80–120 km/h this rhythm produces the characteristic "hypnotic" effect described by many travellers as "lulling."
This is not accidental. Psychophysiologically the "wheel" rhythm is close to 1–2 Hz — the same band as deep-sleep delta waves. Bayer and colleagues' work (Current Biology, 2011) on a related phenomenon — an infant rocking cradle at 0.25 Hz — showed that measured low-frequency rocking accelerates falling asleep and deepens the N2 sleep stage. Train "clack-clack" works through the same mechanism: predictable low-frequency rhythm plus light body vibration = rapid nervous-system calming. That is why people get so sleepy on trains, even by day.
Use this track for long writing sessions (a journey as metaphor, plus rhythm for productivity), for travel podcasts, for meditative "road" playlists, for people with anxiety disorders as a gentle "therapeutic background," and as a sleep aid for those who fall asleep well on trains. Pairs with Rain on Windowsill (outside the carriage), 68 bpm Drum, Light Snoring (for a "sleeping neighbour" effect). Suitable for sleep.
