Train Journey
"Train Journey" is a travel mix for long railway trips: a base of passenger train (the characteristic "clack-clack" of wheels), with muffled voices from neighbouring compartments, a quiet air conditioner and occasional rain outside the window on top. "The Trans-Siberian Express," "the Orient Express," "European InterCity" — an image of a long railway journey.
Train journeys carry particular psychological significance in literature and culture. From Tolstoy ("Anna Karenina") to Christie ("Murder on the Orient Express"), the train is a place of "literary concentration," a metaphor of life's journey, a container of meetings and partings. Psychophysiologically the rhythmic "clack-clack" of wheels at 80–120 km/h is close to 1–2 Hz — the band of deep-sleep delta waves. Bayer and colleagues (Current Biology, 2011) showed that measured low-frequency vibration accelerates falling asleep. This explains the "hypnotic" effect of trains familiar to travellers.
Use this mix to imitate a train journey at home (especially for those missing trains), for writing "road" prose (Ishiguro, Bowles, Theroux), for long reading (trains have historically been a reading place), for people recovering from stress (a light hypnotic background), and for planned train journeys as "anticipation." Pairs with Passenger Train (source), Reading in the Metro (urban variant), Autumn Walk (contrast). Suitable for light sleep.
