Taiko drums (88 bpm) A

Taiko (88 bpm), variant A, is a Japanese rhythmic pattern played on large wadaiko drums at 88 beats per minute. Taiko are Japan's traditional ensemble drums, with a history of more than 1500 years (Bender, Taiko Boom, 2012); the modern ensemble form (kumi-daiko) was shaped in the mid-20th century. The recording is dense, with deep lows (60 to 120 Hz) and sharp mid-register accents, the rhythm based on a simple breathing pulse in 4/4.

The 88 bpm tempo has special meaning in music psychology. Trost and colleagues (Cerebral Cortex, 2014) showed that tempos in the 80 to 100 bpm range are often described by listeners as energetic but not anxious, the so-called uplift zone close to a person's natural walking pulse. Most parade marches and sports tracks land here. Bittman and colleagues (Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, 2001) also showed that group drumming sessions are linked to improved immune response and lower stress.

Use this track for morning workouts, for running and cardio (88 bpm is comfortable brisk-walking tempo), for active concentration on creative tasks (design, brainstorming), for writing dynamic scenes, or for podcasts on Japanese culture. Pairs with 94 bpm Drum, Taiko B and Tribal Chants. Not for sleep or analytical work with numbers; too much energy.
