Reading Time
"Reading" is a delicate focus mix for long reading of fiction and non-fiction: a base of cozy fireplace (soft crackle), with barely audible rain on the windowsill and a ticking clock on top. The scene "evening with a book in an armchair by the window" — an image from 19th-century English and Russian prose.
The mix is chosen particularly carefully: reading is an active cognitive activity especially sensitive to background noise. Sörqvist and colleagues (Journal of Educational Psychology, 2010) showed that any speech disturbance in the background reduces reading comprehension because the brain involuntarily "extracts" speech from the background and processes it simultaneously with the text. So this mix contains no voices or hints of speech — only natural and domestic "non-speech" sounds the brain safely ignores.
Use this mix for long fiction reading (novels, novellas), for academic reading (textbooks, monographs), for people who "cannot read in silence," for prepping for exams with large text loads, and for slow evenings with a book and a cup of tea. Also suitable for audiobook "active listening" — but watch volume (the mix should be 5–10 dB quieter than the voice in headphones). Pairs with Library Study (for academics), Rainy Night (extra cosiness), Reading Nook (more "homely" variant).
