Library Study
"Library Study" is a focus mix for academic work and exam preparation: a base of public library (the soft rustle of pages and footsteps, a distant tick), with gentle keyboard taps around and the thin hum of an air conditioner on top. The acoustic image of a university library at "glorious silence" — the most productive place for study around the world.
The mix works through a combination of two effects. First, the low acoustic level (35–45 dB of rare events) is the optimum for analytical work per Smith and Jones (Journal of Educational Psychology, 1994). Second, the sense that "others are working too" activates social arousal via the Zajonc effect (Science, 1965): even without seeing them, we know others are working, and our own mobilisation rises. In a library this effect is maximal — everyone around is studying, and our brain "doesn't want to fall behind."
Use this mix for exam prep (especially tests with large factual content), for academic reading and note-taking, for writing term papers and theses, for professional certification exam prep, for people preparing for interviews (drilling concepts), and for teens and students whose homes are too distracting. Volume low (30–45 dB). Pairs with Deep Work (for a more "sheltered" mode), Reading (as kin scene), 68 bpm Drum (for tempo).
