Insomnia Relief
Against Insomnia is a specialised mix for people with chronic or episodic insomnia: a base of brown noise (the softest standard noise reference), with barely audible cat purring at low frequencies and a faint distant ticking clock on top. The aim is to create a maximally neutral, safe and regular sound context with no emotional triggers.
This is important to understand: with insomnia the issue is usually not lack of fatigue but a hyperaroused sympathetic system. Bonnet and Arand, in their review (Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2010), showed that people with chronic insomnia have significantly elevated baseline cortisol, heart rate and muscle tone during sleep attempts. Standard natural mixes (with thunderstorms, birds, the city) may contain too many events and maintain hyperarousal. This mix takes a different approach: minimum events, maximum regularity.
Brown noise masks all outside sounds, purring (20 to 50 Hz) activates the parasympathetic system (Qureshi et al., Journal of Vascular and Interventional Neurology, 2009), and the clock gives a soft rhythm without emotional load. Use this mix if you've been lying down for 20 minutes or more and can't sleep, if you're woken by micro-sounds (neighbours, radiator creak), or if you had intensive mental work in the evening. Don't use it if insomnia is tied to specific night fears; that needs psychotherapy, not sound alone.
