Snore Masker

"Snore Masker" is a practical mix for people whose partner or roommate snores loudly: a base of dense white noise at moderate volume, with highway noise and air conditioner on top to broaden the spectrum. The aim is an acoustic "mask" that, by loudness and spectral distribution, fully covers the partner's snoring while remaining more "neutral" and less irritating to the listener.

The principle of noise masking is described in the classic Bies and Hansen, Engineering Noise Control (Taylor & Francis, 2009): for effective masking of a source, the masker's spectrum must cover the source's spectrum by 5–10 dB. The snoring of a typical adult has a fundamental tone in the 80–500 Hz range with peaks up to 60–70 dB; white and highway noise together give even coverage exactly in that band.

Use this mix if: your partner snores and wakes you; you have thin walls and hear neighbours; you're in a hotel room with a noisy window; you're a parent whose teenager games in the next room. Set volume by experiment: the masker should be 2–3 dB louder than the source, but not so loud that it wakes you itself. In practice that is about 50–60 dB for an average bedroom. Don't use the mix without snoring — without the source it's just noise that's not needed. Pairs with Brown Noise (if the partner has low-frequency snoring) and Floor Fan.
