Cave Meditation

"Cave Meditation" is a deep meditative mix with the acoustics of an underground temple: a base of damp cave (the characteristic closed echo), with a low Om (resonating in the stone space), melodic gong, and occasional water dripping from stalactites on top. The spiritual practice of hermits — the cave cells of Christian monks in Cappadocia, Indian yogis' "guhas," Tibetan caves in the Himalayas.

Cave meditation has a millennia-old tradition in many religions. As early as the 4th century CE, Christian "desert" hermits in Cappadocia and Palestine practised long retreats in caves. In the Hindu tradition cave meditation (guha-dhyana) is described in the Shiva Sutras. Padmasambhava, the legendary 8th-century Buddhist teacher, meditated in Maratika cave. Modern neuroscience offers an explanation: a closed cave space with long reverberation (Vergne et al., Acta Acustica, 2007) creates an acoustic "sensory deprivation" which, per Kjellgren and colleagues (BMC Complementary Medicine, 2008), accelerates entry into altered states of consciousness.

Use this mix for deep meditation (45+ minutes), for experienced practitioners, for preparing for major life decisions, for writing mystic prose (Eco's "The Name of the Rose," Hesse's "Siddhartha"), for people in spiritual crisis or periods of deep change, and for practitioners of the Christian hesychast tradition. Not for beginners in meditation — can cause discomfort from dense sensory deprivation. Pairs with Tibetan Practice (to amplify), In a Cave (natural kin), Om Mantra (continuation).
