Penthouse View is a luxury city mix with the acoustics of a high-rise apartment in a big city: a base of distant city noise (quieter than at street level due to height), with a light breeze over the rooftops, the occasional siren far below and a quiet air conditioner on top. Manhattan from the 30th floor, Mumbai from the 50th, Shanghai Pudong; an image of contemporary urban aristocracy.
A high-rise apartment is a particular acoustic landscape. Street sounds arrive 15 to 25 dB quieter than at ground level (Pavón García and colleagues, Building and Environment, 2018) and are qualitatively transformed: high frequencies (conversations, footsteps) almost completely attenuate, leaving only low ones (traffic, infrastructure). This creates the characteristic feeling of city outside, but not around me, a psychological state Bachelard in The Poetics of Space (1958) called elevated shelter: both above the world and at its centre.
