Fireworks

Fireworks is the soundscape of a holiday salute: a series of powerful bangs with long echoes through urban space, the hiss of sparklers, the appreciative ooh of a crowd behind the microphone. The recording captures a typical New Year or national-holiday salute, about five to eight bursts per minute with peak claps at 85 to 95 dB, plus the small fruity shock-shock-shock of multiple minor explosions.

Acoustically a firework is the analogue of a thunderclap, but more rhythmic. Its emotional impact is deeply contextual: surrounded by a celebrating crowd, the same decibels produce euphoria, while alone they can trigger anxiety. This is called the emotional context of perception (Cuthbert et al., Psychophysiology, 1996). For pets and people with PTSD, fireworks remain a stressor even in a festive context: Crouch and colleagues (Animal Behavior and Cognition, 2019) showed that dogs' cortisol rises as much as an hour before the bursts begin, as soon as the people around them start talking excitedly.

Use this track for New Year playlists, podcasts on holidays and pyrotechnic history, recording greeting videos, writing celebration scenes, and sound design. Pairs with Stadium Atmosphere (for the crowd), Christmas and Christmas Bells. Not for sleep, meditation or working with animals in the room, and remember that for people with combat PTSD this is a heavy trigger.
