0Om mantra
The Om mantra (or Aum) is the most ancient syllable of the Indian spiritual tradition, already described in the Mandukya Upanishad (8th–6th c. BCE). Phonetically it breaks into three phases — A (open guttural), U (rounded labial) and M (closed nasal) — and when intoned correctly produces a long sustained tone in the 110–150 Hz range with rich overtones and characteristic nasal-cranial resonance. This same phonetic structure makes it easy to sustain a long exhalation, which makes "Om" one of the most effective vocal meditation techniques.
Modern neuroscience records several reproducible effects of Om chanting. The fMRI study by Kalyani and colleagues (International Journal of Yoga, 2011) showed that during Om chanting subjects exhibit deactivation in limbic structures — amygdala, hippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex — a pattern very similar to that seen under vagus-nerve stimulation in depression. Additionally Harne (Indian Journal of Otology, 2014) documented increased EEG alpha activity with regular practice, traditionally associated with calm wakefulness.
In this recording Om is sung in a natural mid register with overtones gradually layering — giving a sense of a "humming sphere," very suitable for paired breathing techniques: you can chant in sync with the recording or simply breathe to its rhythm (slow 8–12-second cycles). Use the track for morning meditation, for pranayama, for sleep preparation (one of the few vocal sounds that does not activate the speech centre in a working-memory mode) and for writing on spiritual literature. Pairs with Singing Bowl, 432 Hz, Tribal Chants. Not the best choice as background for analytical work — the brain involuntarily sings along.
