Forest Night
Forest Night is a forest sleep mix with the acoustics of an ancient European forest in the dark. A base of dense forest with leaf rustle, over which sit distant crickets, the occasional hoot of an owl and a barely perceptible light breeze in the canopy. An acoustic walk into the night forest without fear: the forest breathes, and the listener feels part of it.
Forest sounds are one of the most studied categories of natural background. Buxton and colleagues (PNAS, 2021), in a meta-analysis of 36 studies, showed that listening to forest sounds (especially with birds and leaf rustle) lowers salivary cortisol by 5 to 15% over 20 minutes of exposure. The effect is independent of whether the listener can actually see the forest; the acoustics alone do the work. Owl hoots add rare low-frequency anchors around 200 to 400 Hz that the brain reads as "no predators, only me and the night."
Use this mix for falling asleep, especially in cities where natural background is lacking, for forest-and-silence meditation, for writing forest scenes in Scandinavian and Eastern European prose, for yoga nidra, and for extended trauma-therapy sessions (the same mechanism as forest bathing; Park et al., Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, 2010). It tolerates long-form background listening well.
