Water trickle

Water trickle is the most spa-associated of the water tracks: a continuous gentle stream with minimal turbulence, its spectrum concentrated in the mid-range (300 to 2000 Hz) with almost no sharp attacks. Acoustically it sits closest to a desktop decorative fountain, the sort of sound deliberately used in premium offices and Japanese garden design.

In a study by Ratcliffe and colleagues (Frontiers in Psychology, 2013), such soft water sounds showed the best ability to lower perceived cognitive load of all the nature tracks tested, outperforming birds and forest noise. The authors link this to the hypnosis-inducing predictability of a constant stream: the brain quickly tires of predicting variations and shifts into passive observation mode.

Use it for spa sessions and any body-based practice (massage, acupuncture, yoga nidra); for long breath-focused meditations, where the flow of breath and the flow of water reinforce each other; or as a light background in a computer room, to maintain a sense of naturalness in a technologised environment.

Pairs well with a singing bowl (sound bath), a gentle breeze or an Om mantra. Don't combine it with rain; spectral competition. Safe for most listeners, though in some people it triggers a urinary reflex (the well-known running-water effect described in postural-reflex neurology). Use cautiously before long meetings.
